TCU sends two to Colorado Springs for the three-day tryout
FORT WORTH – Two TCU volleyball stars will be participating in the 2024 USA Volleyball Women's National Team Open Program from Feb. 23-25 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Sophomore outside hitter Jalyn Gibson will be joined by recent transfer Becca Kelley, who spent last season at Oregon, as they venture to Colorado Springs for their shot to represent the United States in international play.
The USA Volleyball Open Program is a three-day tryout where college-age athletes can compete for a spot on the U.S Women's National Team and the U.S Women's Collegiate National Team.
The tryout will feature more than 200 women's volleyball players. Jordan Larson, gold medalist and MVP from the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women's Team, will speak to the athletes. Representatives from all three U.S. women's pro volleyball leagues will also be on hand.
Gibson is fresh off a stellar sophomore season with the Horned Frogs, receiving both All-Big 12 Second Team Honors and being named to the AVCA All-Southwest Region First Team. Gibson led the team in hitting percentage with a .259 mark while also finishing second on the team in kills per set (3.24) and total kills (366)
She also posted 10 or more kills in 23 matches and finished the season second on the team with 11 total double-doubles. Thriving in high-pressure situations, Gibson recorded 17 kills in TCU's NCAA Tournament first round win against No. 22 Florida State and followed the performance up with a double-double in the Round of 32 against the Arkansas.
A transfer from Oregon, Kelley is no stranger to repping the Red, White and Blue. Prior to spending last season in Eugene, Kelley was a star for USA Volleyball. As a member of the 2023 Girls U19 National Team, she won gold at the 2023 FIVB U19 World Championships and was also named the USA Volleyball All-Star Championship Division MVP.
In her senior season at Rockwall High School, Kelley recorded over 500 kills and averaged almost six kills per set, earning All-State honors while also leading her team to the Texas 6A regional semifinal. In her senior season, she also brought in All-America honors from AVCA and Junior Volleyball Association. She also holds the school record for most kills in a single match at 40 kills.
