FORT WORTH – Riley Cornelio of baseball along with Sydney Juszczyk and Gracie Morris of women's track and field and the entire men's basketball team have all been named TCU Student-Athletes of the week, presented by Bob's Steak and Chop House.
The men's basketball team enjoyed their share of March Madness last week as they competed in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in San Diego, Calif. The Frogs defeated eighth-seeded Seton Hall in the first round to record TCU's first NCAA tournament victory since 1987. They then advanced to the second round where they faced first-seeded Arizona. The Frogs valiantly battled all the way to overtime but were ultimately defeated 85-80. Chuck O'Bannon Jr. led three Horned Frogs with 20 or more points. O'Bannon scored a career-high 23 points and Mike Miles Jr. scored 20. Eddie Lampkin Jr. recorded career-highs in scoring with 20 points and rebounds with 14 against the Wildcats
Cornelio, a sophomore from Monument, Colo., has been knocking it out of the park at pitcher, recently he tossed 8.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four baserunners during the Frogs battles against the Baylor Bears. Cornelio also managed to match his career-high seven strikeouts and retire 10 of the final 10 batters he faced. He was awarded Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for his work on the mound during the Frogs' 3-0 win at Baylor.
Baseball will return to Charlie and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium this Friday, March 25, to work their Lupton Magic against the Kansas State Wildcats. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be available for streaming on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Jusczyk, a native of St. Louis, Mo., is having a dominant start to her TCU track and field career. During her debut appearance as a Horned Frog, the freshmen won the javelin with a school record breaking mark of 46.64m (153-0).
Morris joins Jusczyk on the list of track and field Frogs who made dominant debuts over the weekend. The sophomore from Aledo, Texas won the 800 by approximately six seconds after running the second-fastest time in school history (2:06.36) during her TCU outdoor debut.
Track and field will travel to Austin this week to compete in the Texas Relays. Events begin on Thursday, March 24, and continue through Saturday, March 26. The competition will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
