Horned Frogs to begin the season at Pebble Beach
FORT WORTH – TCU will open the 2021-22 men's golf season on Friday with the Carmel Cup at one of the most beautiful courses in the world, Pebble Beach Golf Links.
It will be the eighth time in the last 10 years that the Horned Frogs will visit Pebble Beach. The event was not held last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
TCU will go with the lineup of junior Gustav Frimodt, senior Jan Schneider, junior Chris Berzina, junior Brent Hamm, junior Caden Christopherson and sophomore Brandon Massey. The top five scores will count each round.
The eight-team field features four programs from the Big 12 Conference and four from the Southeastern Conference. Six of the teams are ranked in the Bushnell/Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll including four in the top 10. Along with TCU, No. 2 ranked Oklahoma State, No. 7 ranked and last year's national runner-up Oklahoma and No 9 Texas Tech will be there to represent the Big 12.
TCU received votes in the coaches poll, but is ranked No. 23 in the GolfChannel.com preseason poll.
The teams will play three rounds beginning Friday and end on Sunday. Tee times will start as early as 9:10 a.m. CT each day. TCU will tee-off at 10:10 a.m. CT on Friday.

THE COURSE – Par 72 | 6,828 yards
Pebble Beach Golf Links is unanimously rated as the No. 1 public course in the country. Pebble Beach hosted its sixth U.S. Open in 2019, more than any other course over the last 50 years. The course hosts the PGA TOUR event AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am every February, a tradition that began in 1947.
LAST TIME OUT
TCU finished 16th at the NCAA Championship last season. It was its fifth top 20 finish in the last eight seasons. Aymeric Laussot advanced to the fourth round where he finished tied for 61st place.
NOTES
- Of the six playing at the Carmel Cup, only Gustav Frimodt has played Pebble Beach before. Frimodt played at the 2019 Carmel Cup as a freshman.
- TCU won the Carmel Cup in 2012 with Julien Brun winning the individual title. The last time the tournament was held in 2019, the Frogs finished fifth.
- TCU lost three from last year's team and welcome newcomers Ethan Dial, Brent Hamm (Troy) and Jan Schneider (Washington).
- Among the 10 returners are four that played in TCU's postseason run last spring. Jacob Skov Olesen led TCU a team-high four times and was on the PING All-Central Region Team. Gustav Frimodt was Academic All-Big 12 and had 10 rounds of par or better. Aymeric Laussot had eight rounds of par or better. TCU's top finisher at the Big 12 Championship was Filippo Celli who led the Frogs with an average score of 71.77 last season. He won't be available in the fall, but will join the team in the spring.
- Celli will compete at the European Tour's Italian Open this weekend near Rome, Italy.
- TCU has qualified for four of the last six and eight of the last 12 NCAA Championships. TCU has advanced to 18 of the past 31 NCAA Championships since 1991.
- TCU is one of nine programs to finish in the top 20 of the NCAA Championships in five of the last eight seasons. Those programs are Arizona State, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, TCU and Vanderbilt.
- TCU is one of 15 schools to play in the last two NCAA Championships.
- TCU and Clemson are the only two programs to make the last 31 NCAA Regionals with the same head coach. Last season was Clemson head coach Larry Penley's 38th and final season at the school.
- Bill Montigel is in his 42nd season at TCU and his 35th season as the head coach of TCU men's golf. Associate Head Coach Adrien Mork is in his fifth season at TCU.
