Three Horned Frogs have recorded big results on the internationals stage this summer
FORT WORTH – After delivering the greatest season in TCU beach volleyball program history, several Horned Frogs have been finding tremendous success over the summer, playing for national teams and on the FIVB pro tour.
Sophomores Daniela Alvarez, Tania Moreno and Maria Gonzalez have each landed strong results over the summer, including European U20 runner-up (Moreno), Junior Pan American Games qualifying (Gonzalez) and a win over 2019 beach volleyball world championship pair on the FIVB world tour (Alvarez).
During regular season, first-team All-America, Alvarez, set a program record for most wins by a freshman in a single season and was also awarded All-Conference and All-Rookie CCSA team honors at the conclusion of the season. Since then, Daniela made it to the main draw of FIVB World Tour in Gstaad where she was responsible for one of the biggest upsets in the tournament, defeating 2019 World Champions and 2021 Olympians Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes (Canada) in pool play on her way to a Top 20 finish at the tournament.
Alvarez and Moreno teamed up in the European U22 Championships in May. The duo, fresh off of being named just the second all-freshman All-America duo in the history of collegiate beach volleyball, entered the tournament as the lowest seeded pairing, only to win all three of their pool matches, including a 21-18, 21-12 victory over the No. 1 seeded pair, on their way to a fifth-place result.
Moreno, Alvarez's regular season partner and fellow All-Conference/ All-Freshman CSSA honor recipient, has been alongside her teammate on the Spanish national team. She went 26-7 this season and set first year records with Alvarez in total wins, ranked wins, and a program record for most wins by a No. 1 pair. Moreno competed in the U20 European Championships in Izmir, Turkey, where she dominated the field, posting a 6-1 record on her way to a silver medal at the event.
Gonzalez went 24-11 last season and won 10 ranked matches, mostly playing with partner, Rochelle Scott. Gonzalez played in the NORCECA U23 Women's Beach Volleyball qualifier winning the gold medal, representing Puerto Rico. This victory qualified her for a spot in the Junior Pan American Games to be held in Cali, Colombia from November 25 to December 5.
