FORT WORTH — Luc Fomba, Chengetayi (Du) Mapaya and TCU's men's 4x100 relay team have been named TCU Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by Bob's Steak and Chop House.
Fomba won three of his seven break points to take down Ohio State's Cannon Kingsley in straight sets as the Horned Frogs advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight with a 4-1 victory over OSU. Kingsley entered the match with a perfect 27-0 record in singles matches before facing Fomba.
The sophomore set a new career high with his 22nd singles victory this season, improving his dual record to 14-6 and 9-3 at No. 2.
At No. 1 doubles, Alastair Gray and Fomba found their break at 3-2 to go in front 4-2. From there, Gray and Fomba's serves took over as the Frogs comfortably held serve for the remainder of the match to collect their first win together in NCAA tournament play. They improve to 14-7 as a pairing this season and 11-7 at No. 1 doubles. TCU is 10-2 in doubles when Fomba/Gray collect a win.
Mapaya established a facility record, season-best mark and Big 12 Championship record with his distance of 17.01 meters (55' 9.75") in the triple jump.
He captured his third facility record at R.V. Christian Track & Field Complex en route to his fourth Big 12 title. Mapaya jumped 16.78m (55' 0.75") to break the E.B. Cushing Stadium Record this past month in College Station, Texas. His first facility record occurred at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center during indoor season where he leaped 16.85m (55' 3.5"), breaking the school record.
The Harare, Zimbabwe, native broke Will Claye's Big 12 Championship record (16.94m) from 2009 on his first attempt. Claye went on to be an Olympian for the United States in 2012 and 2016. The Olympic standard this year is 17.14m.
The men's 4x100 squad of TJ Brock, Tinotenda Matiyenga, Kundai Maguranyanga and Robert Gregory Jr. also garnered gold medals. The squad ran a 39.75 in a downpour, topping Texas by four-thousandths of a second.
