FORT WORTH – The duo of Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno Mateeva of beach volleyball, Phillip Sikes of baseball, Du Mapaya of indoor track, and Janis Silins of swimming and diving have been named TCU Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Bob's Steak and Chop House.
Alvarez is a freshman from Asturias, Spain, and Moreno Mateeva is a freshman from Madrid, Spain. The powerhouse duo finished the weekend undefeated against ranked opponents with a perfect 4-0 record. Helping TCU beach volleyball to a 3-1 record, including two wins over higher ranked opponents in the same day for the first time in program history. Alvarez and Moreno were awarded AVCA National Pair of the Week, marking the first time a Horned Frog duo has ever won the award.
Beach Volleyball will compete at home against Central Arkansas this Friday, Mar. 5.
Sikes is a junior outfielder from Paris, Texas. The Horned Frogs began the week against Texas Southern, Sikes helped secure the win with an inside-the-park grand slam, his first homerun as a Horned Frog. He delivered eight RBIs this past week, including an inside-the-park grand slam in TCU's 20-0 victory over Texas Southern.
The Frogs take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this Friday, Mar. 5 in Houston, Texas.
Mapaya is a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe. On Friday, Feb. 26, Mapaya won his second Big 12 Indoor Triple Jump Championship at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center. He secured a Gold Medal with only one jump for the crown by leaping 16.55m on his first attempt.
TCU begins the NCAA Championships on Mar. 12 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Silins is a sophomore from Valmiera, Latvia. Last Wednesday at the Big 12 Swimming Championships in Austin, Texas, Silins notched his second silver medal. He has now earned silver medals in both the 100 and 200 breast in back-to-back years. Silins swam a 1:54.54, which broke his own school record while picking up his fourth and fifth NCAA B cut in the event between the prelims and finals. He also broke his own record in the 100 breast, which marked his seventh NCAA B cut of the season.
TCU will compete in the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships on Mar.11 in Lexington, Kentucky.
