Sophomore Daniela Álvarez won eight matches at the U22 and U20 European Championships this month
FORT WORTH – Sophomore Daniela Alvarez earned the honor to represent her home country of Spain in two European Championship tournaments throughout September. Álvarez won four matches in both tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals in both the U22 Championships and the U20 Championships.
The U20 European Championships took place from September 9-13 in Brno, Czech Republic. Álvarez played with her compatriot, Sofía González Racero. The duo won all three of their matches in pool play, dropping only one set in the process, to advance into the knockout rounds. Álvarez and her partner powered past the No. 12 ranked pairing in the tournament, from Poland, in their first match but fell in a hotly-contested match against the No. 6 seeded pairing from Switzerland, 21-19, 26-24, to finish in eighth place.
Just two weeks later, Álvarez was headed to Izmir, Turkey to participate in the U22 European Championships (Sept. 23-27), a step up in competition from the prior tournament. Álvarez had a new partner, María Belén Carro Márquez de Acuña, and together they went 2-1 in their group matches to earn a spot in the Round of 24. The Spaniards overpowered a pairing from Israel to advance into the Round of 16. In the next round, Álvarez and Carro were pushed to the brink, fighting in the longest match of the whole tournament (54 minutes). But they overcame the No. 8-seeded pairing from Czechia to advance to the quarterfinals. They would fall in the quarterfinals to the top-seeded pairing and eventual runners-up from Russia.
Álvarez is an experienced member of the Spanish national teams. She played in the Quinzhou Open of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour last fall, where she battled with three-time Olympic gold-medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and Brooke Sweat.
She will return to Fort Worth to play in her sophomore season in the spring of 2021. She will be joined by Spanish national teammate, Tania Moreno Mateeva. Álvarez won five matches, playing on the top-pairing for the Horned Frogs in 2020.
