Akins, Alvarado earn weekly honors from TCU
FORT WORTH - Marz Akins and Emily Alvarado, both from soccer, have been named TCU Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Bob's Steak and Chop House.
Akins is a freshman defender from San Diego, Calif. She made her first collegiate start as a freshman versus Baylor this past Friday and was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week. Akins played all 110 minutes of a 0-0 tie at Baylor where she demonstrated extensive endurance. Akins consistently established her talent by helping limit Baylor to just nine shots and only four on goal. She was instrumental in defending Baylor's five corner kicks last Friday and cleared the ball twice out of the attacking zone in the first half.
Alvarado is a senior goalkeeper from El Paso, Texas. Alvarado recorded her 14th career shutout at Baylor. Alvarado had a huge save early in the game, shaking the Baylor offense. She made four total saves versus Baylor, leading to the 0-0 tie in double overtime. Alvarado serves as a great example for her teammates, along with her several accolades throughout her career, she was a member of Mexico's 2020 World Cup qualifying team and was 1st-Team Academic All-Big 12 last season.
TCU (0-0-1) will open its home schedule Friday against Texas at 7 p.m.
