FORT WORTH – Desmond Bane of men's basketball, Alastair Gray of men's tennis and the men's track and field 4x400 relay team have been named TCU's Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Cram Crew.
Bane, a senior from Richmond, Ind., led the Horned Frogs in scoring in their 75-72 win over No. 2 Baylor, the highest-ranked home win in school history. The guard scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half on 7-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-5 from 3-point range, as TCU overcame a 12-point deficit. With under six minutes to play, he scored eight straight points as part of a 13-0 TCU run. The senior also recorded a double-double against Iowa State on Tuesday. Bane averaged 22.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists over the two games and received Big 12 Player of the Week honors for his performance.
The men's basketball team is set to take on No. 1 Kansas Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Gray, a junior from Twickenham, England, helped the TCU men's tennis team extend its winning streak to six matches as it took down No. 14 Ole Miss and No. 8 Stanford over the weekend. Individually, Gray defeated two top-60 opponents in singles, including a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the No. 29 ranked player in the nation on Sunday against the Cardinals. The junior received his second Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season and jumped 20 spots in the latest Oracle ITA Singles Rankings, moving up to a career-best ranking of No. 30 in the country.
Gray and the men's tennis team will look to continue their winning ways when they host Tulsa on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The men's track and field 4x400 relay team consisting of Jostyn Andrews, Tinotenda Matiyenga, Simbarashe Maketa and Derrick Mokaleng won gold for the frogs at the Big 12 Conference Indoor Championship. Heading into the final lap of the race, the Frogs sat in third, but Mokaleng's 45.47 anchor leg propelled the team into first place. It marked the third conference title for TCU in the 4x400 in the past four years between indoor and outdoor seasons.
The Frogs wrap up their indoor season at the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., March 13-14. The men's 4x400 relay will compete again, this time setting their sights on a national title.
