DENTON, Texas – Sophomore Mariah Castillo became the first Horned Frog to place first in a 5K since Agnes Kemboi back in 2012.
Kemboi won the Notre Dame Invitational (16:53) and the Ken Garland Invitational (17:02.72) that year.
Castillo eclipsed the rest of the field with her 18:02.32 mark. The next closest time was 53.64 seconds behind her. This is just the Saugus, Calif., native's fourth collegiate cross country race.
"I thought Mariah ran solid, she started conservatively and then just ran away from the field in the second half," cross country coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "She looks very relaxed right now as we continue to build fitness."
Junior Evelyn Mandel crossed second for TCU's women, securing a third-place finish with a time of 19:00.44.
Lakelin Conrad crossed the finish line first for the Frogs on the men's side for the second week in a row. The sophomore crossed in 22:16.57 and finished 16th in the 4-mile. Samuel Busa followed directly behind him, placing 17th with a mark of 22:26.83.
As a team, the men finished third while the women finished fourth.
"The majority of the team is young and still learning to race," Fazioli said. "The footing on the course was challenging but all were able to engage and race late."
Up next for the Frogs is the Gerald Richey Invitational on Sept. 14 in Dallas.
