FORT WORTH -- Mariah Castillo of TCU's women's cross country team garnered Big 12 Runner of the Week honors for her standout performance.
Castillo won her second race of the season at the Gerald Richey Invitational 5K this past weekend with a mark of 17:35.1. She shed over 25 seconds off her time from the Ken Garland Invitational on Sept. 7, which she also won. The sophomore is the first TCU runner to win two races of any distance in a single season since Agnes Kemboi accomplished the feat in 2012.
"Mariah is just starting to round into form after a long summer of rehab and buildup in her return from injury," cross country coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "We know there's more to come and are excited to see how she continues to progress the rest of the fall and into the track season."
This is the first time a Horned Frog has collected Big 12 Cross Country Runner of the Week honors since Brenley Goertzen. Goertzen won the award back in Sept. of 2017 after making her season debut at the Texas A&M Invitational 6K. She placed second in College Station, finishing in 20:36.1.
