South Africa’s 4x400 team placed second with a mark of 3:03.18
RABAT, Morocco – Derrick Mokaleng and the South African 4x400 team garnered silver medals at the African Games inside the Olympic Stadium at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
"The African Games were a wonderful experience and learning curve," Mokaleng said. "I learned a lot about my body, fitness and the recovery process."
The South African squad placed second with a mark of 3:03.18. The team consisted of Ranti Dikgale, Nkateko Hlungwani, Thapelo Phora and Mokaleng.
Mokaleng also received a bonus bronze medal for helping get the 4x100m team into the finals. He ran in the first-round heat due to a temporarily injured teammate. In that heat, South Africa ran a time of 39.76, good for second behind Ghana's 38.80. Ghana went on to win the gold medal in the 4x100 finals.
Next up for Mokaleng is the IAAF World Championships next month where he'll join teammate Chengetayi Mapaya. Mapaya will compete for his home country, Zimbabwe, in the triple jump.
"All in all, it was great representing my country again," Mokalang said. "Now coach and I can plan forward to running better at World Champs in September."
The IAAF World Championships run from Sept. 27-Oct. 6 in Doha, Qatar.
