FORT WORTH, Texas – Six members of the TCU equestrian program set off to see the world this summer. All of the student-athletes spent time in Europe, while Drew Rogers and Lily Geelan found their way down to South Africa after spending time in England.
Jacey Albaugh
Albaugh spent two months living in Bocholt, Belgium, as a working student for Double H Farm. From Belgium, she traveled all over Europe to different shows in Saint Tropez and Dinard, France. On off days, she would go to Amsterdam and Eindhoven to explore.
"I have been able to travel a lot this summer, which I haven't done outside the U.S., and getting to experience so much traveling at once has been amazing. It has been great coming to Europe to ride because it gives me a purpose. Things are much less rushed, and time is taken to appreciate breaks and meals throughout the day as a group. I think that is a major difference in how barns are run in Europe versus America. Riding is a lot more common in Europe and is well respected as a sport, which is by far the biggest difference between European and American riding. Grand Prix classes in Europe are sold out like it's the Super Bowl. I really enjoyed being in Europe without being a tourist. It has been great to live in the community, grocery shop, run errands, and experience how most Europeans actually live."
Laska Anderson
Anderson was a recipient of TCU's AddRan Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, which she used to attend a conference at the Medici Archive Project in Florence, Italy. In her time abroad, she would conduct research at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris.
"The experience was absolutely incredible! I dream of becoming a history professor, so the opportunity for research and hands-on work with other historians was excellent preparation for me. I am so grateful to TCU for giving me this amazing opportunity!"
Janelle Henningsen
Henningsen spent her summer studying abroad in London for five weeks through the Neeley School of Business, for her supply chain management class. During her time, she lived in South Kensington. When Janelle was not studying, she would travel around London and venture outside to experience Europe. She was fortunate enough to take weekend trips to Paris, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. She embraced her time in London, diving into the culture and trying to know what it really felt like to be a local. Some of her favorite moments in London included going to Wimbledon, visiting Cambridge, going inside Buckingham Palace and seeing Les Miserables.
"This trip went by faster than I ever imagined. I hope one day I can live in London. I learned to live in the moment while abroad. That was necessary for me to take all the history in that was right in front of me. I also learned how to step outside my comfort zone and to be okay when things went wrong. It happened multiple times on my trip and being so far from home, it was a step learning this. I loved my time in London and will remember my time there forever."
Drew Rogers and Lily Geelan
Rogers and Geelan had the opportunity to travel for a week to London, England and see some of the most historical and famous pieces of history. They went to West Minster Abby, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and Windsor Castle. After London, Drew and Lily traveled down to South Africa to begin their Study Abroad experience. While there, the two had the opportunity to work first hand in preventing the poaching of rhinos. They would dehorn the rhinos, check on the animal's pregnancies and vaccinate them. They did this work for water buffaloes and a handful of other animals as well. After working at the Amakhala Game Reserve, they ventured south to Cape Town where they worked with the children at the ACJ Primary School in their physical education class. They also worked with the Women's Empowerment Program. They would teach computer skills to women in programs like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
"It was one of the most amazing experiences to get the chance to see how much history was in England and how much craftsmanship was put into each and everything we saw." Rogers said "Our experience in South Africa left an impact that will last for the rest of our lives. We went to South Africa with the mindset that we were going to help the people there and give to them. However, the people there taught us more than we could have ever imagined. The country of South Africa and the people there changed our lives forever and I am so grateful that we could experience it.
Skylar Smith
Smith spent her summer abroad as an au pair in Italy. She spent her time in both Milan and Rimini, where she lived with two different host families. Her au pair positions covered housing and food in exchange for childcare. While in Italy, Skylar was a train ride away from seeing Italy and Europe as a whole. Working as an au pair afforded her the opportunity to continue to ride as well as take some classes online in her free time.
"It was such an incredible experience that I will never forget. I am so thankful for my two host families and all the people I met who helped me during my travels. I felt so immersed in the culture and got to see so many beautiful places and meet many inspiring people. The trip was amazing, and I would recommend au pairing for anyone who wants to travel and make money while doing so. I also learned too, life is too short, get the double scoop of gelato!"
