SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Destiny Longmire earned TCU track and field's first spot at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet with a third-place finish in the women's long jump on Thursday evening at the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, Calif.
Longmire entered the meet as the No.11 seed in the women's long jump and finished third with a jump of 6.37m (20-10.75), her second-farthest jump this season. In the meet, Longmire was the top performer from the Big 12 and was the only competitor to surpass 6.25m on all three attempts. In the indoor season, Longmire finished fourth at the NCAA Championship and was a Second-Team All-American at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championship.
TCU also advanced a trio of sprinters to Friday's quarterfinals. Derrick Mokaleng finished second in his heat and fourth overall in the men's 400m with a time of 45.66. In the first round of the men's 100m, both Tarrick Brock and Tinotenda Matiyenga finished third in their respective heats to clinch spots in the next round. Brock finished in 10.30 (w+0.8), the eighth-fastest time in the field and his fastest time this season since running 10.21 (w+3.0) at the Texas Relays.
"First and foremost, congratulations to Destiny advancing on to the final round of the NCAA meet in Austin in two weeks," head coach Darryl Anderson said. "I thought we had a relatively competitive day, advancing three guys to the next round with Derrick Mokaleng in the 400m, Tino Matiyenga and TJ Brock in the 100m. Now we'll get some dinner in us and get ready for tomorrow."
Friday will feature TCU in three quarterfinals and two first rounds. Mokaleng (400m), Brock (100m), and Matiyenga (100m) will compete for one of 12 spots in their events that will advance to Austin, while Brittney Trought will open the first round of the 100 hurdles and Matiyenga will compete in the first round of the 200m. For TCU, the women's 100 hurdles are scheduled for 6:30 pm CT, followed by the men's 400m at 7:45 pm CT, the men's 100m at 8:15 pm CT, and the men's 200m at 9:55 pm CT.
