FORT WORTH, Texas – Alastair Gray of men's tennis and Chengetayi Mapaya of men's track and field have been named TCU's Student-Athletes of the Week.
Gray, a junior from Twickenham, England, played a key role in TCU's win over No.7 Mississippi State in their NCAA Championship Round of 16 matchup. In doubles action, Gray paired up with Alex Rybakov defeated Mississippi State's No.3 nationally ranked doubles team to clinch the doubles point. In singles, Gray clinched the match on court two with a three-set win. Just before serving the match out, Gray fell on the court and needed stitches.
Up next, TCU will face No.2 seed Texas in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in Lake Nona, Fla., at the USTA National Campus. The match is scheduled for Thursday, May 16 at 1 p.m., CT.
Mapaya, a sophomore from Harare, Zimbabwe, won his second career triple jump title at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Norman, Okla. On his first attempt, Mapaya jumped 16.52m (54-2.5) and never trailed in the meet. TCU has now won the last four Big 12 triple jump titles. In 2018, Scotty Newton won both the indoor and outdoor titles and Mapaya has won both titles in 2019.
Up next, TCU's regional qualifiers will head to Sacramento, Calif., for the NCAA West Region Preliminary meet and compete for a chance to advance to the final NCAA site. The regional meet is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25.
