WACO, Texas – TCU track and field made the trip down I-35 on Saturday to compete at Baylor's Michael Johnson Invitational. On a day with several season improvements, Derrick Mokaleng meeting the IAAF World Championship standard in the 400m was the highlight for TCU.
IAAF STANDARD
The standard to qualify for the 2019 IAAF World Championships in the 400m was 45.30 and Mokaleng had a time of 45.70 entering Saturday's meet. In a tight race with Baylor's Will London, Mokaleng dropped his time down to 45.17 and finished second. This marks the second time in Mokaleng's career that he has ran 45.17 and it is the second-fastest of his career. Mokaleng's personal-best time of 45.02 is the current TCU school record.
BECKFORD
On the women's side, Lily Beckford had a career day as well in the 400m. For the first time of her career, Beckford ran sub-53 with a time of 52.71 and finished fourth. Beckford's time ranks fifth in TCU history and is the fastest by a Horned Frog since 2011.
MEN'S 4x400
TCU's mile relay of Blake Hennesay, Jostyn Andrews, Tinotenda Matiyenga, and Mokaleng capped off the meet with a second-place time of 3:07.25.
WOMEN'S SHOT PUT
Central Michigan transfer Brooklin Klopf had a career day in the shot put on Saturday, winning the open flight with a personal-best throw 14.54m (47-8). Her throw is the longest by a Horned Frog since 2016 when All-American honorable mention Megan Smith set the school record. Klopf's throw moves her to sixth in school history.
HIGHLIGHTS
In the women's 100m invitational, Destiny Longmire matched her personal-best and ran 11.57 for a seventh-place finish.
In her second meet of the season, Brittney Trought lowered her season-mark in the 100 hurdles with a fifth-place time of 13.60.
Running in the men's 200m invitational, Matiyenga finished fourth with a time 20.96.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"Derrick, to run 45.17 and get second in a hotly contested race, I felt really good about that," head coach Darryl Anderson said. "That'll move him way up on the leaderboard and put him in the top 5 in the country. Then Lily Beckford had a PR today in the 400 at 52.71, so we had some good things happen in the quarter. Today, we had some consistent performances. Now we just gotta take it from here and get ready for Arkansas next week. We leave on Thursday, so hopefully the weather will provide us two good training days before we get on that bus. After that, it's about getting ready for postseason."
UP NEXT
The Horned Frogs hit the road to compete at the National Relay Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., their final meet before the Big 12 Outdoor Championships. The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 26-27 and Saturday's action will be broadcast on ESPN.
