No. 21 Horned Frogs set to open their spring season
FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 21 TCU women's golf team opens its spring season Sunday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R.
Momentum
TCU won back-to-back championships this fall at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio and the Jim West Challenge in San Marcos. The Horned Frogs have won 20 tournaments in Angie Ravaioli-Larkin's 25 seasons as TCU's head coach, but this marked the first time to capture consecutive championships. TCU then closed its strong fall campaign with a second-place finish at the Battle at the Beach in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
The Event
The Horned Frogs are playing in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic for the ninth straight year and 14th time in the last 15 seasons. The three day, 54-hole event will be held at the 6,203-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club. TCU's 14 overall appearances are tied for the third-most in the 17-year history of the tournament. The Horned Frogs' best performance in the event was a tie for third in 2008. TCU was sixth last year with Annika Clark tying for ninth individually. Her final round even-par 71 was the tournament's low score on the day.
How to Follow
Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com. Sunday and Monday's tee times begin with a 6 a.m. CST shotgun start. Tuesday's final round is at 5:30 a.m. CST.
The Field
Nine of the 14 teams in the field are ranked. Joining TCU are Arkansas, Augusta, East Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa State, Kent State, Maryland, NC State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Virginia Tech.
The Lineup
TCU will feature a lineup of Grace Do, Valeria Pacheco, Sabrina Iqbal, Greta Bruner and Annika Clark.
Do, a sophomore from Coppell, Texas, has played in all 14 tournaments in her TCU career. Her 73.5 stroke average is over two shots better than a year ago (75.7). She had consecutive top-10 finishes to close the fall season with three top-20 results in four tournaments.
Pacheco played in all four fall events and has a 75.0 stroke average. The freshman from Hallandale Beach, Fla., recorded her top finish with a tie for 18th at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.
A freshman from San Jose, Calif., Iqbal has a team-best 72.3stroke average. She was a co-medalist at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational with a 1-under 143. She also carded a 4-under 212 in tying for seventh at the Jim West Challenge.
Bruner is second on TCU with a 72.7 stroke average, an improvement from a 74.4 mark a year ago when she earned an NCAA Regional selection. She had a pair of top-10 finishes in the fall, including a third-place result at the Battle at the Beach with a 2-under 211. She has four top-10 finishes in her last nine events. The junior from Conroe, Texas, recorded a team-best four eagles in the fall and is now tied for third in TCU history with seven career eagles.
Clark, the lone senior in the lineup, is third on TCU with a career-best 73.0 stroke average. A Highlands, Texas, native, Clark has two top-10 finishes this season. Sunday will mark her 100th career round as a Horned Frog.
Remember When
At the 2007 Lady Puerto Rico Classic, TCU's Valentine Derry, playing in her first collegiate tournament, earned medalist honors. She shot a 5-under 67 in the first round. It remains tied for the sixth- and eighth-best score all-time for first rounds and all rounds, respectively, at the event.
