Mapaya, Longmire, and Beckford earn weekly honors.
FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU track and field's trio of Chengetayi Mapaya, Destiny Longmire, and Lily Beckford have been named TCU's Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Cook Children's Medical Center.
Mapaya, a sophomore triple jumper from Harare, Zimbabwe, had a career weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships. After breaking the school triple jump record earlier in the season, Mapaya extended his record with a jump of 16.83m (55-2.75). Mapaya's jump led him to his first career Big 12 title and moved him up to No.3 nationally in the TFRRS performance list.
Longmire, a junior jumper from Moreno Valley, Calif., also won a conference title at the Big 12 meet. Entering the conference championships, the San Jose State-transfer held the top long jump mark in the conference and ranked tenth nationally. In Lubbock, Longmire jumped a personal-best 6.39m (20-11.75), winning the title and moving up to No.5 in the nation.
Beckford, a graduate student sprinter from London, England, was TCU's third conference champion on the weekend. Running in the 600-yard, Beckford dominated the field in both the prelims and finals and won the title with a 1:19.69 mark, the fastest time in the NCAA. Beckford also anchored TCU's women's 4x400 relay and led the team to a season-best 3:36.74 and finished fourth.
Mapaya and Longmire, along with Derrick Mokaleng and TCU's men's 4x400 relay will wrap up the indoor season next week at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The rest of the team will prepare to begin the outdoor season at the TCU Invitational, the team's lone home meet. The NCAA indoor meet is scheduled for March 8-9 and the home meet is scheduled for March 16.
