Head Coach Hector Gutierrez named Maria Jose “Majo” Orellana assistant coach on Thursday.
FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU beach volleyball head coach Hector Gutierrez made a new addition to his staff on Thursday with the hiring of Maria Jose "Majo" Orellana as assistant coach.
Orellana, a professional beach volleyball player that has represented her home country of Guatemala in numerous international events, comes to Fort Worth after being the Beach Volleyball Director at Coast Volleyball Club.
"I just can't express with words how happy I am to have Majo with us," Gutierrez said. "Majo is exactly what this program needs. With a full coaching staff, our next goal is to make the NCAA Championships this year. Majo is going to bring to our program tons of experience from not only being a coach, but also from her time as a professional beach volleyball player. I couldn't ask for a better coach to join our family and Majo is going to do great things with us."
Representing Guatemala, Orellana competed in the 2003 and 2007 Pan American Games in beach volleyball and also played on the indoor Guatemalan National Team at the 2016 World Championship qualifier. Pairing in 2003 with Sylvana Gómez, the duo finished fifth while also picking up a ninth place finish in 2007 with Anna Ramírez. Orealla partnered up with Ramírez again at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games and came out of the competition in seventh place. The duo also captured the Guatemala National Championship in 2009.
In recent years, Oreallana has competed with her sister and current TCU beach volleyball player Mandi Orellana in international competition with the duo picking up fifth and sixth place finishes at two NORCECA competitions in 2016. The pair played in four tournaments during the 2014 season with a best finish of sixth at the event in Antigua, Guatemala.
From June 2013 to December 2016, Orealla was the Executive Director of the San Diego Beach Volleyball Club where she taught boys and girls from ages 8-18 year round as well as adults and aspiring college players. Oreallana managed the staff and helped facilitate the recruiting process for young athletes wishing to play beach volleyball in college.
Orellana was also the founder of Dig It by Majo Orellana where she coached beach volleyball players from Central American and helped link them to the United States to play at the next level. Orellana had two former athletes represent Guatemala at the U19 World Youth Championships in Cyprus in 2012 and two play beach volleyball collegiately.
Orellana earned her bachelor's degree in marketing and advertising from the Universidad Rafael Landívar in 2004.
