
TCU Qualifies 19 for NCAA Prelims

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The NCAA announced the entries for the NCAA Track & Field West Preliminary meet on Thursday. The TCU track and field team earned 19 entries in 13 events for the first round of the NCAA championship.
In order to qualify for the west preliminary round, individuals must be ranked in the top 48 of declared athletes in their events and relays must be ranked in the top 24. The top 12 in each event from the first round will advance Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
TCU brings two of the top seven triple jumpers to the west prelim, with Big 12 champion Scotty Newton ranking second with a jump of 16.85m, while indoor national bronze medalist Chengetayi Mapaya ranks seventh with a 16.25m jump.
Several Horned Frogs solidified their spots in the NCAA first round with key performances at the the Big 12 Outdoor Championship last weekend. Derrick Mokaleng broke the TCU 400m record with a 45.02 finish, the ninth fastest in the country. In addition to his triple jump mark, Newton also reached his season-best in the long jump and finished fourth at the conference meet. TCU's two 200m qualifiers, Darrion Flowers and Tinotenda Matiyenga, earned their top marks in Waco as well. Also reaching their top marks were Emmanuel Ogwo in the 400m, Justin Sanchez in the men's hammer throw, Brittney Trought in the women's 100 hurdles, Lexi Aitken in the 400 hurdles, and the men's 4x100 relay.
TCU's 4x400 relay ran its fastest mark of the season at the National Relay Championships in Arkansas. Flowers, Ogwo, Jostyn Andrews, and Mokaleng finished in 3:03.74 and enter the west prelims as the sixth seed.
TCU will bring a pair of highly ranked throwers to Sacramento as well. Ryan Camp enters the first round as the eighth seed in the discus, bringing a mark of 58.55m (192'1") from the Sun Angel Classic. In the hammer throw, Fellan McGuigan enters ranked No. 13 with a throw of 64.46m (211'6").
Evelyn Mandel brings one of the fastest 5000m marks by a freshman to the NCAA first round. At the Mt. Sac Relays, Mandel ran 16:27.80, the seventh best time among freshman in the NCAA west region.
The NCAA first round, hosted by Sacramento State University, is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26, in Sacramento, Calif.
