TCU wrapped up competition at the USA Shooting Center
FORT WORTH, Texas – Current and former members of the TCU Rifle team competed in Colorado Springs, Colo. at the Winter Airgun Championships and Smallbore Selection Match this past weekend.
Sophomore Elizabeth Marsh was the top Horned Frog shooter in the match as she placed third overall in the junior division and eighth in the all-age division at the Winter Airgun Championship. Alumni Sarah Beard blew away the field as she was the top finisher in the Smallbore Selection Match.
Winter Airgun Championship
On Day 1 four Frogs qualified for the finals. Beard shot the third highest score in qualifying and took home a silver medal in the finals. Marsh finished with a qualifying score of 623.1 and won gold in the junior final after placing fourth in the open final. Mindy Miles placed seventh overall in the finals while current Horned Frog Casey Lutz rounded out the top eight in both the open and junior finals with a mark of 622.6.
The following day three Frogs qualified for the open finals and junior finals. Miles, Marsh and Beard competed in the open final for the second straight day and placed fifth, sixth and eight, respectively. In the Junior Division, current TCU freshman Kristen Hemphill qualified for the final and finished seventh with a score of 623.9 on day two. Lutz took home a fifth-place finish in finals, while Marsh finished in fourth in her second final of the night.
Overall, four current Frogs placed in the top nine of the junior division. Marsh placed third with a two-day score of 1,247.6 (623.1, 622.0). Her score was also good for eighth in the all-age division. Lutz picked up a fifth-place finish after firing a 1,245.4 (622.6, 620.8). She also grabbed a 10th place finish in the all-age division. Hemphill, who reached the final on the second day, shot a 1,242.6 (617.7, 623.6), good for seventh overall. Freshman Angeline Henry scored a ninth-place finish after firing a 1239.9 (616.8, 623.1).
In the all-age division, Beard finished fifth overall with a two-day score of 1249.4 (625.2, 623.7). Miles followed in seventh place firing a 1,248.1 (622.1, 624.0).
Smallbore Selection Match
On the opening day of smallbore competition Beard fired a world-class score of 1,185 to take a 16-point lead over the field. Her Day 1 score from qualifying was five points higher than the world record for the event. Current assistant coach of the TCU rifle team Hannah Black also competed, shooting a two-day score of 2,323 (1,162 and 1,153). Black won the final with a score of 455.5 edging out the competition by a margin of 0.2.
Overall Beard won the match with a two-day score of 2,364 and Black placed second. By winning the match Beard punched her ticket to New Delhi, India for the ISSF World Cup next year.
