FORT WORTH -- A pair of TCU men's golfers will begin play at the prestigious U.S. Amateur on Monday when Chelso Barrett and Turner MacLean tee off at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Maclean, a sophomore, will tee off at 7:20 a.m. CT on Monday from hole No. 1 on the South Course at Oakland Hills. Barrett, a senior, will tee off shortly after at 8:10 a.m. CT, also from No. 1 on the South Course.
For Tuesday's second round, MacLean will tee off from No. 10 on the North Course at 12:45 p.m. CT and Barrett will also begin at No. 10 on the North Course at 1:35 p.m. CT.
"The goal of every amateur in the world is to play in the U.S. Amateur," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "To have two guys from TCU in the field is a huge deal. I'm excited to watch Chelso and Turner play with the world's best next week."
All 312 golfers in the field will play two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. The top 64 after those two rounds will then advance to match play, which begins on Wednesday. Match play will continue until next Sunday when a champion will be crowned.
That champion will be exempt to play in all majors next season except the PGA Championship, while the runner-up will be exempt to play in the U.S. Open and the Masters.
"For amateur golfers this is our biggest tournament of the year," Barrett said. "I don't try to put expectations on events. I always try to get in the top 64 at the U.S. Amateur, and then in match play anything can happen. Just getting to match play is the key, and staying patient is what will get me there."
"My goal is to have as much fun as I can with my brother (Mack) on the bag," MacLean said. "If I play my best golf, I go in thinking I can win. You have to have that mindset. Anything else and you are selling yourself short. A lot of really good players never qualify for this event, so my brother and I will enjoy every minute of it."
FS1 and Fox will have coverage of the event, starting on Wednesday, August 17, when match play begins and running through Sunday, August 21, when a champion is crowned.
Oakland Hills is one of eight courses that have hosted the U.S. Open (1924, 1937, 1951, 1961, 1985, 1996) the U.S. Senior Open (1981, 1991), the PGA Championship (1972, 1979, 2008) and the U.S. Amateur (2002, 2016). The course also hosted the 2004 Ryder Cup.
MacLean will be grouped with Jin Ho Chung, a junior at San Francisco, and Alex Moorman, a redshirt freshman at Kansas. Barrett will be grouped with Kyle Sterbinsky, a sophomore at Wake Forest, and Justin Suh, a sophomore at USC.
