WACO, Texas -- TCU freshman women's golfer Annika Clark won the 94th WTGA State Amateur Championship on Friday at the Ridgewood Country Club.
A native of Highlands, Texas, Clark posted a 3&2 victory over the University of Houston's Maddy Rayner in the championship match. Previous winners of the WTGA State Amateur include legends Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Betsy Rawls and Sandra Haynie.
Clark drained birdie putts of 10, 12 and 8 feet within the first four holes for an early 3-up lead. The advantage then held throughout the day. Clark regained her 3-up lead when she rolled in a 6-foot par putt on the 12th hole. Clark closed the match with a two-putt par on the 16th hole.
"It means a lot to me," Clark said. "It's kind of unreal. It definitely hasn't hit me just yet. This was my first match play tournament win."
In addition to numerous family members, TCU women's golf head coach Angie Ravaioli-Larkin was on hand to watch and support Clark.
Clark is part of an impressive freshman class at TCU that also includes Brooke Graebe, Brooke McDougald and Sabina Pena. Pena recently became one of three Horned Frogs to qualify for the 2015 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
