FOOTBALL SEASON NEARING
Between Big 12 Media Day on Monday and head coach Gary Patterson's visit to ESPN on Wednesday, it was a great week of exposure for our football program. We begin camp on Aug. 4 with the first practice set for Aug. 5. Below is a photo of Coach Patterson during his live appearance on SportsCenter.
MEET THE FROGS
Please mark your calendar for Saturday, Aug. 22, when our annual and very popular Meet The Frogs is held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility. It's a great opportunity for pictures and autographs with our football student-athletes and Coach Patterson.
It's fun each week to share academic highlights from our student-athletes and sports programs. Congratulations to men's sprinter Sam Watts as well as our women's track and field team on garnering All-Academic honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association!
Additionally, three-time first-team All-America men's golfer Julien Brun was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.
We are incredibly proud to be sold out of football season tickets with our new record-breaking total of 34,060. Reflecting back when you hired me in November 2009, we got excited when we hit the 12,000 mark. I can't thank the Horned Frogs Nation and city of Fort Worth enough! You're truly the best!
We do have soccer and volleyball season tickets available. It should be an exciting campaign for both sports. Please CLICK HERE to make your purchases.
We continue to make great progress on the facility upgrades for our baseball program at Charles and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium at Williams-Reilly Field. The below image shows some of the demo work already completed as we make room for new team and alumni locker rooms, a classroom, team lounge, sports medicine center, equipment room and coaches' offices. We'll also have a new video board in place for next season. All work will be completed in time for the 2016 opener.
Our Jane Justin Field House at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium is truly one of the premier facilities of its kind. In case you haven't had a chance to tour the inside, please CLICK HERE. The facility opened in 2010 and was made possible by a $1.5 million gift, the largest donation specifically for women's athletics in TCU history.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: It was Will Ferrell, as Frank The Tank in Old School, who said, "Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday. We're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time."
This Week: "You get your first ten-speed bike, and suddenly you're Lance Armstrong."
A local sporting goods store would like to recognize Ocean State University (OSU) women's soccer student-athlete Hat Trick for winning an award at the FIFA World Cup. The store will buy advertising space on a billboard near campus that reads "Congratulations Hat Trick! We are all very proud of you!" Is this permissible?
Yes with conditions. NCAA Bylaw 184.108.40.206 states that it is permissible for a student-athlete's name or picture, or the group picture of an institution's athletics squad, to appear in an advertisement of a particular business, commercial product or service, provided: (Revised: 5/21/08)
(a.) The primary purpose of the advertisement is to publicize the sponsor's congratulations to the student-athlete or team;
(b.) The advertisement does not include a reproduction of the product with which the business is associated or any other item or description identifying the business or service other than its name or trademark;
(c.) There is no indication in the makeup or wording of the advertisement that the squad members, individually or collectively, or the institution endorses the product or service of the advertiser;
(d.) The student-athlete has not signed a consent or release granting permission to use the student-athlete's name or picture in a manner inconsistent with the requirements of this section; and
(e.) If the student-athlete has received a prize from a commercial sponsor in conjunction with participation in a promotional contest and the advertisement involves the announcement of receipt of the prize, the receipt of the prize is consistent with the provisions of Bylaw 220.127.116.11.3 and official interpretations.
