The Field
The top 16 individuals and top 12 relay teams qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Horned Frogs will face off against competitors from 33 other schools, including four Big 12 institutions.
Long Jump
Sophomore Cameron Echols-Luper is coming off a Big 12 title win in the long jump on Feb. 27 in Ames, Iowa. A native of Auburn, Alabama, Echols-Luper's jump of 7.61m (24-11.75) on his second attempt won him the championship and was TCU's first indoor title in the event since 2004. His top jump was set this season in Fayetteville at a mark of 7.72m (25-4). He comes into Friday's event with 12th best jump in NCAA competition this season.
60 Meters
Junior Ronnie Baker holds the sixth-best time in the 60 meters this season at 6.56 seconds, a personal-best. The Louisville, Kentucky, native set the mark in Albuquerque on Jan. 31 and is the second-fastest time in program history. Three times this season, Baker has finished with a time under 6.60, with the most recent coming at the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 28 behind a second-place finish at 6.59 seconds. In that race, he finished ahead of the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked competitors in the 60 meters this season.
200 Meters
Junior Sam Watts ranks fifth in NCAA competition this season in the 200 meters. On Jan. 31, Watts, from London, England, posted a time of 20.69, which was the world's leading mark at that point in the season and also ranks second in the TCU indoor record books. In Fayetteville on Feb. 14, he clocked in at 20.70 at the same track he will compete on for the championship meet.
4x400 Relay
At the Arkansas Open on Feb. 21, the mile relay squad recorded a first-place finish behind a time of 3:06.05. The team of freshman Kevin McClanahan, sophomore Raymond Bozmans and juniors Baker and Watts posted the time on the same track they will compete on Saturday, which is good for fifth in NCAA competition this season and ranks third in program history.
Into the Rankings
The TCU men's squad is currently ranked at No. 15 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) computer rankings. It's the third consecutive week the Horned Frogs have been ranked inside the top 20. TCU opened the season in the No. 25 slot, the highest preseason mark for the TCU men since 2011 and have been ranked as high as 14th this season.
Big 12 Honors
The men's team has earned Big 12 Athletes of the Week honors twice this season.
This week, the 4x400 relay team garnered the conference award after posting a time of 3:06.05 in their win at the Arkansas Open. The team of McClanahan, Bozmans, Watts and Baker moved into the No. 3 slot in the program's record books with the time. Watts (third leg) and Baker (anchor) posted the two fastest splits at 46.18 and 45.29, respectively.
On Feb. 4, junior Sam Watts received the Big 12 Male Co-Athletes of the Week award after his performance at the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque. At the meet, he recorded a time of 20.69 for a first-place finish in the 200 meters for the world's fastest mark in 2015 at that point in the season. He also put up a time of 6.84 in the 60 meters, which was a personal-record. It's the first time he's earned the accolade in his young career.
