FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU women's golf team opens its spring season Sunday when it begins play at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande.
The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort and Rio Mar Country Club, River Course. The Lady Puerto Rico Classic began in 2003, and TCU will be playing in it for the 10th time in the last 11 years. The Horned Frogs' best performance in the event was a tie for third in 2008.
Sunday's opening round will have a 6 a.m. CST start with live scoring available at www.BirdieFire.com.
This year's field includes four top-25 teams in No. 6 Arkansas, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 16 LSU and No. 17 Auburn. GRU-Augusta (28), Kent State (30) and host Purdue (45) round out top-50 participants. Also competing are Clemson, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa and Michigan.
Alexandra Bonetti, Emmy Martin, Kortnie Maxoutopoulis, Kelly McGovern and Chaney Uhles will represent TCU.
Martin leads the squad with a 73.9 stroke average and was one of three Horned Frogs to compete in all four fall tournaments. The freshman from Odessa, Fla., has improved her score in every event, including a 4-under 212 at the Alamo Invitational (Oct. 26-28) to close the fall season.
Bonetti's 74.8 stroke average is second. Her 30 career tournament appearances are the most among active Horned Frogs.
McGovern and Uhles both carded hole-in-ones during the fall season.
TCU has had past success in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. In 2007, Valentine Derry, playing in her first collegiate tournament, shot a 5-under 67 in the first round. It remains the fourth- and sixth-best score all-time for first rounds and all rounds, respectively.
