FORT WORTH, Texas -- Junior Jada Butts had a game-high 18 points as TCU opened the 2015-16 season with a 85-59 win over Sam Houston State at the University Recreation Center on Friday night.
TCU (1-0) opened the game with 11 straight points as Butts, senior Zahna Medley and sophomore AJ Alix hit three-point field goals in the opening three minutes of the game to help the Horned Frogs build the early double-digit lead. The Frogs used three runs of at least 9-0 or better in the opening half to build a substantial cushion of 25 points at the break. The TCU defense was big in the opening stanza, limiting the Bearkats to just 16.7 percent shooting from the field.
Butts had one of her best outings of her career to open the season, posting 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting and getting five steals in just 21 minutes of play to pace the Horned Frogs.
It was also a historic night for Medley as she entered the top five in the TCU record book for career points, the top four in career assists and moved into second in career three-point field goals. Medley finished with 12 points in limited action for the Frogs.
Alix added 11 points and senior Veja Hamilton had 12 points to round out the four Frogs in double figures.
The Frogs, playing in the University Recreation Center during the completion of the new Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena, have won seven straight at home overall and 16 of their last 17 non-conference matchups at home.

18 -- TCU forced the Sam Houston State starting lineup into 18 turnovers in the contest. For the game, TCU forced 23 turnovers that results in 27 points off turnovers for the Frogs.

"This was a great chance for us to get in the win column," said head coach Raegan Pebley. "I was proud of the effort our team played with and the sustained effort (we had). We made mistakes, but I felt like our effort made up for those mistakes throughout the game. There were a lot of TCU players on the floor hustling, getting after loose balls, creating deflections, and that's what we like to see out of our team."
NOTES
TCU has now won seven straight home games, five straight home non-conference games and 16 of its last 17 home non-conference games.
TCU held Sam Houston State to just 6-of-36 shooting in the opening half, a 16.7 percent clip. The game marked the first for TCU played with four quarters.
Junior Jada Butts had 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the game as she posted her fifth career double-figure scoring game. Butts also had a career high five steals.
Senior Zahna Medley had 12 points. Her 12 points moved her to 1,448 in her TCU career, tying her for fifth place in the TCU record book alongside Janice Dziuk.
Her six assists moved her into sole possession of fourth place on the TCU career assist list, passing Adiranne Ross' 387 career assists. Medley now has 388.
Medley made three, three-point field goals in the game and is now tied for second on the TCU career chart for made three-point field goals with 232 alongside Ashley Davis.
Senior Destynee Hives-McCray made her TCU debut early in the first quarter for the Horned Frogs. She finished with eight points and six rebounds.
