Frogs Near Top at Nike Collegiate Invite

PORTLAND, OREGON -- TCU is tied for fifth and just seven strokes out of the top three after one day at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. The loaded field includes 11 of the top 25 teams in the latest national rankings with TCU currently ahead of two teams ranked in the top 10 nationally.
The Horned Frogs shot a team score of 279 in the opening round, the team's best round of the season to finish five-under par. It is the best team score for the Horned Frogs since shooting 264 on opening day of The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., on March 26, 2015.
Senior Paul Barjon led TCU with an opening round 68, his best round of the 2015-16 season. It was Barjon's 16th round of his TCU career shooting under 70, including first in 2015-16 and seventh in the last two seasons. Barjon is tied for ninth after one day in Portland.
Junior Giulio Castagnara shot 69 to open a tournament for the second consecutive event. He is tied for 17th after one round. Chelso Barrett and Triston Fisher both shot 71 on opening day to round out the counting scores for the Horned Frogs. Turner MacLean shot 79 to round out the TCU lineup.

Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club is rich in history and tradition, playing host to six USGA championships including Tiger Woods' dramatic victory in the 1996 US Amateur, his unprecedented third consecutive US Amateur championship. Pumpkin Ridge has also hosted two US Women's Opens, and numerous Web.Com Tour and LPGA Tour events.
Last year at the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, TCU finished 9th of 12 teams with Andrew Presley leading the team with a nine-over par finish in 19th place. The Horned Frogs shot 43-over for the event (299-294-290).
The three-day event continues Monday with the final 18 holes set for Tuesday.
