TYLER, Texas - The Tyler Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler announced Trevone Boykin on Wednesday night as the recipient of the 2014 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented to a player who was either born in Texas, graduated from a state high school or plays at a Texas-based University.
Boykin was instrumental in TCU recording one of its greatest seasons in school history in 2014.
Boykin, who finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting, earned All-America honors from Walter Camp, Associated Press, USA Today, CBSSports.com and Phil Steele. He was also the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Offensive Most Valuable Player.
In addition to winning the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, Boykin was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, Manning Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
A junior from Dallas, Boykin set TCU single-season records for passing yards (3,901), touchdown passes (33), touchdowns responsible for (42) and total offense (4,608). He was a four-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week while being named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week on three occasions. He received the award after passing for four scores and running for two in a 56-0 win at SMU and after his seven touchdown passes in an 82-27 victory over Texas Tech. He also won after totaling a career-high 559 yards of offense, including a 55-yard scoring grab, and five touchdowns in a 55-3 victory over Iowa State.
In a 41-20 win over Kansas State, Boykin passed for 219 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 123 yards and three scores. He was one of only four quarterbacks this season to have 200 yards passing, 100 yards rushing and three touchdown runs in a game.
Boykin ranked third in the nation in total offense at 354.5 yards per game. He became just the third quarterback since 2009 to average at least 300 yards per game passing (300.1) and 50 rushing (54.4). The others were Heisman Trophy winners Robert Griffin Iii and Johnny Manziel.
Boykin led TCU to its first Big 12 championship in just its third season in the conference. The Horned Frogs capped their 12-1 campaign with a 42-3 win over Ole Miss in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
With Boykin behind center, the Horned Frogs were the nation's most-improved team in both total offense (+188.2 ypg) and scoring offense (+21.4 ppg). TCU ranked in the top-five nationally in both categories. The Horned Frogs also have the nation's longest-current streak (15 games) of scoring at least 30 points. TCU set single-season school records for points (604), first downs (331), plays (1,038), passing yards (4,240) and total offense (6,929).
