FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU men's golf team opens the 2014-15 season on Friday at one of the world's most recognizable golf courses, competing at the fourth annual Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, Calif.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins on Friday morning with six golfers counting five scores. TCU is joined by some of the nation's top programs, including Texas Tech, Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
The Horned Frogs made their only other appearance at the Carmel Cup in 2012 when they claimed the team title and Julien Brun earned the fourth of his nine career tournament crowns with a 10-under 206.
Brun, one of six Frogs that will compete this weekend, returns for his senior season at TCU as the school's all-time record holder in nine categories, including tournament wins (nine) and career stroke average (70.48). The six-time First-Team All-American ended last season on a tear with back-to-back titles at the Big 12 Championship and NCAA San Antonio Regional.
Joining Brun in Pebble Beach are returners Paul Barjon, Giulio Castagnara and Chelso Barrett and newcomers Andrew Presley and James du Preez. Presley provides a talent infusion to the TCU lineup after spending his first three collegiate seasons at LSU, where he was a two-time Second-Team All-SEC performer, while du Preez is a freshman that enjoyed a stellar prep career in South Africa.
The Frogs are led by head coach Bill Montigel, who enters his 28th year at the helm. Montigel has guided TCU to 25-straight NCAA Regional appearances, joining only two other schools nationally to achieve the feat under the same head coach. TCU was just two strokes shy of advancing to the NCAA Championship last season despite a lineup featuring just two returning starters.
