FORT WORTH - TCU sophomore pitcher Riley Ferrell was been invited to the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He becomes the first player in school history to participate in two tours with the National Team.
"One of the highest honors an amateur player can achieve is to be invited to participate with USA Baseball," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "Riley was a very important member of our USA National Team last year and I'm sure will be an integral part of the pitching staff this summer. He has truly earned this opportunity with his performance on the field, hard work and great character."
Ferrell has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen this season and is 1-0 with four saves. He ranks third on the team with 29 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings pitched. Ferrell boasts a 0.98 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .131 batting average.
In his first stint with the Collegiate National team, Ferrell made nine appearances and tallied two saves. He fanned 15 and allowed just one hit in 8 2/3 innings of work.
Jake Arrieta the first Horned Frog to earn a spot on the National Team roster, doing so in 2006, the same year Schlossnagle served as an assistant coach. In 2010 Kyle Winkler pitched for Team USA and Danny Wheat was tabbed the head athletic trainer. TCU had a pair of representatives in 2011 as Josh Elander and Andrew Mitchell participated on the squad. The Frogs had three player representatives in 2013 as Ferrell was joined by Brandon Finnegan and Preston Morrison on a squad that was managed by Schlossnagle.
