GREETINGS FROM KANSAS CITY
This week's edition of Notes on a Scorecard comes from Kansas City, site of the Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship. We will be in action tonight at 8:30 versus Baylor. Check your local listings for the Big 12 Network. In DFW, it's Channel 21.
SPRING BREAK
Our campus is a little quiet this week due to Spring Break. We hope all our students are enjoying a nice and safe vacation.
HONOR ROLL
Congratulations to Kyan Anderson from our men's basketball program on receiving All-Big 12 accolades. Kyan has truly had an outstanding season. He's one of just five players in the conference to rank in the top 10 in both scoring and assists. It's rewarding to see Kyan's efforts recognized by both the Big 12 head coaches and media. Congratulations as well to Zahna Medley from our women's program on being a first-team All-Big 12 selection. Zahna was also named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team. Making that honor even more impressive is that she was the only member of the squad whose team didn't play in the championship game. Zahna set TCU single-game conference tournament records for points (32) and 3-pointers (6) against West Virginia. Latricia Lovings, who leads the conference in blocked shots, earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Defensive Team.
DMC RENOVATION
The demolition is well underway on Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Work on the $59 million renovation will continue over the next 18 months as our campus and Fort Worth communities will take pride in a new home for TCU basketball.
NEW DIGS
As we've mentioned previously, all our departments who were previously housed in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum have been relocated. The Frog Club is now in the guest services office on the lower level near Gate 2 on the southwest corner of Amon G. Carter Stadium. Compliance, marketing, media relations, IMG and spirit, as well as some additional Frog Club personnel, are now in the press box. The final group to move is our ticket office. They can now be found in the northeast corner of the stadium at the ticket windows at Gate 6.
RADIO HONORS
We were very pleased to see our radio crew honored for the fourth straight year, and fifth time in six seasons, for providing the best live sports play-by-play call in the state of Texas. Congratulations to play-by-play voice Brian Estridge, color analyst John Denton, sideline reporter Landry Burdine, spotter Wayne Gossard, engineer Josiah Miller and statistician Brian Sperry for their continued excellence on behalf of TCU.
ON THE DOCKET
As mentioned earlier, our men's basketball program begins Big 12 Tournament play tonight at 8:30 versus Baylor. Our women, with an 18-win campaign, are hopeful of moving on to the postseason. We'll know Monday night of their possible destination. Rifle and indoor track and field both head to NCAA Championships this weekend. Rifle will be in Murray, Ky., while track and field will be in Albuquerque. Baseball returns home this weekend for a three-game series versus Dartmouth. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Women's tennis hosts Texas on Friday at 2 p.m. with the men having a Saturday 1 p.m. home match versus Middle Tennessee. Women's golf concludes a tournament today in Hawaii with our men beginning play Friday in Tucson, Ariz. We also have men's and women's divers competing in a regional meet in Minneapolis.
BIG 12 CORNER
With the Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship center stage this week, it's worth noting that the conference is still No. 1 in the latest overall RPI, strength of schedule, non-conference RPI, non-conference strength of schedule and Sagarin ratings. Seven Big 12 teams have been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 this season. It's the most of any conference in the country and even more impressive when considering we have only 10 teams.
MEET THE STAFF
Not many collegiate baseball programs can say they have a former major league athletics trainer in their dugout. Danny Wheat is now in his 10th year in that role for us. Prior to his arrival at TCU, Danny worked in the Texas Rangers organization for 26 seasons. He spent 18 years at the major league level, including the final 11 as the head athletic trainer. Danny was selected as the American League athletic trainer for the 1995 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. He was also chosen to be the athletic trainer for the 1998 MLB All-Star Tour of Japan. In three of the last four summers, he has served as the head athletic trainer for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He has also held multiple positions with Team USA. If you've flown with the TCU football team on an American Airlines charter, you might know Danny's wife, Nancy, as one of our flight attendants. Their two sons, Jarrod and Jordan, have both been involved in our athletics program. Jarrod, a 2012 graduate of TCU, was an equipment manager for three seasons with the baseball team, while Jordan is in the athletic training program.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Cousin Eddie, played brilliantly by Randy Quaid in Vacation, said, "I don't know why they call this stuff hamburger helper. It does just fine by itself, huh? I like it better than tuna helper myself, don't you?"
This Week's Quote: Travis Vanderpool, who was the first to correctly provide Cousin Eddie as the answer to the above quote, provides the following for this week, "They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad."
COMPLIANCE CORNER
The head men's soccer coach at Ocean State University (OSU) has begun preparations for his summer camps. Because this was his first year as head coach at OSU, he wants to use a lot of advertising to boost attendance. Is it permissible for the coach to use multiple forms of advertising?
Yes with restrictions. NCAA Official Interpretation - 1/15/09 - Advertising an Institutional Camp or Clinic (I) - states that an institution may advertise or promote an institutional camp or clinic in any way, provided any camp or clinic advertisement or promotion (e.g., camp brochure, website, newspaper or magazine advertisement) stipulates that the camp or clinic is open to any and all entrants (limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender). NCAA Bylaw 13.12.1.3 states that a member institution's sports camp or clinic shall be open to any and all entrants (limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender).
