2013 FOOTBALL TICKETS/PARKING UPGRADES
Once again, thanks to all of you who renewed for the 2013 football season. The Athletics Ticket Office and Frog Club are hard at work assisting those who requested upgrades/relocations. We are currently in Day 3 of a seven-day process. If you try to reach either office for assistance, please be patient as both staffs are experiencing a high volume of calls. Next week, I will look forward to reporting more specifics about the overall process.
2013 FOOTBALL WAIT LISTS
If you are not currently a football season-ticket holder or someone with donor parking but are interested in either for the 2013 football season, please contact our ticket office at (817) 257-7967 or the Frog Club at (817) 257-7700 to be added to wait lists. If you have already been added to either wait list, we will be sending more detailed information next week. We anticipate being able to begin accommodating both groups in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
WHAT A DAY IN WACO!
How about Charles Silmon from our track and field program at Sunday's Big 12 Championships in Waco! Competing in his hometown, Charles earned the Men's High Point Scorer Award. He won in the 100 meters, 200 meters and the 4x100. His mark of 20.33 in the 200 is currently first in the NCAA and sixth in the world. We've now had the conference champion in the 100 meters in each of the last 10 years, and that covers three different leagues. Charles has been instrumental in our men's track and field program currently ranking 17th in the country.
SETTING THE STANDARD
Men's golfer Julien Brun has been named one of three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award, presented to the nation's top collegiate golfer. Only a sophomore, Julien is already our career leader in tournament victories with six.
GREAT HONORS
Congratulations to men's tennis student-athlete Orlando Superlano on being selected for a 2013 Wilson/ITA National Promoter of the Year Award. The honor recognizes individuals who promote the game of tennis at the collegiate level and bring awareness to either their school program or the sport in general. Orlando's efforts on campus and in the community, including his social media outreach, helped us rank No. 1 nationally in attendance with an average of 1,425 fans per home match. Perhaps the best part of the award for Orlando is that he now receives a paid summer internship to work at Wilson's global headquarters in Chicago.
TV TIP
If you need your TCU football fix in May, make sure to catch our Spring Show on Thursday at 9 p.m. on FOX Sports Southwest. You'll see an interview with head coach Gary Patterson, features on student-athletes as well as analysis and insight into our coming season.
WHERE'S THE GRASS?
A popular question we continue to receive regarding Amon G. Carter Stadium is, "Where's the grass?" The answer is that it's not yet time to harvest. The unseasonable ground temperatures have been too cold for the Tiff 419 Bermuda to start much root growth. We still anticipate grass installation to begin next week.
FINAL RADIO SHOW
Please mark your calendar for next Wednesday, May 15, as we'll have the final Jim Schlossnagle Show at the Woodshed from 6 to 7 p.m. It will be the night before we begin our three-game home series with Texas.
ON THE DOCKET
The postseason is here for many of our spring sports. Women's golf, making its 18th-consecutive appearance, begins play Thursday in Norman, Okla., at the NCAA Central Regional. Men's tennis opens the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles with a first-round match Friday versus Drake. Women's tennis begins its postseason run on Saturday in College Station against North Texas. Men's golf, with our longest current streak of postseason berths at 24 years in a row, will travel to Pullman, Wash., next weekend as a No. 2 seed in regional play. Baseball heads to West Virginia this weekend. We'll then close the regular season with a four-game homestand beginning Tuesday versus UTA. Texas then comes to Lupton Stadium for a three-game set that starts next Thursday, May 16. Please note that Saturday's series finale with the Longhorns has had a change in its start time. First pitch is now at 3:30 p.m. to accommodate television.
MEET THE STAFF
As one of our assistant strength and conditioning coaches, Missy Mitchell is a fixture in our Physical Performance Center. Now concluding her fourth year at TCU, Missy works directly with our women's basketball and women's golf programs. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native received her bachelor's degree from UT-Permian Basin and a master's from Baylor. Prior to arriving at TCU, Missy was an assistant volleyball coach and head girls' powerlifting coach at Copperas Cove High School. She had TCU graduate and wide receiver Josh Boyce, now of the New England Patriots, in her mentoring group at Copperas Cove. Missy's husband, Brian McBeth, is the head baseball coach at Chico High School. In her free time, Missy's favorite hobby is competing in beach volleyball.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Khadevis Robinson is a true magical name in our athletics history. A TCU Lettermen's Association Hall of Fame member, United States Olympian and USA champion, Khadevis ran the 800 meters for the Horned Frogs from 1995-98. He captured multiple All-America honors and was the 1998 NCAA champion in the 800. For the past 15 years, since leaving TCU, he has remained a dominant force in track and field, becoming a four-time USA indoor and outdoor champion and a two-time Olympian. Currently, "KD" lives in Columbus, Ohio, and is the assistant women's track and field coach and head women's cross country coach at Ohio State. In addition to coaching collegiate, open and professional athletes, he is an educator, motivational speaker and founder of a youth track and running club. Khadevis was also a former president and board member of the Track and Field Athletes Association.
SPANNING THE GLOBE
In this week's edition of the TCU Nation flashing the Horned Frog sign and apparel from all points worldwide, we see TCU Showgirl Dakota Canales and SuperFrog at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. If you have some great images, please send them my way (delconte@tcu.edu). These are fun to share.
NAME THE MOVIE QUOTE
Last Week's Answer: Longtime funnyman Dan Akroyd, in arguably his defining role as Louis Winthorpe III, in Trading Places said, "The Dukes are going to corner the entire frozen orange juice market!"
This Week's Quote: "You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get." Make sure to check back next week for the answer.
COMPLIANCE CORNER
The NCAA is strictly for amateur competition. Therefore, an individual will be ineligible for participation in any sport if he or she has ever agreed (orally or in writing) to be represented by an agent for the purpose of marketing his or her athletics ability or reputation in that sport. If an individual has signed with an agent in a different sport, he or she will still be eligible in other sports (e.g. a baseball player may sign with an agent to play professional baseball and still retain his eligibility to play football). However, an agency contract not specifically limited in writing to a sport or particular sports shall be deemed applicable to all sports, and the individual shall be ineligible to participate in any sport.
