FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU Rifle team hits the road for the final time this season when it heads west to compete against UTEP on Saturday in El Paso.
The Horned Frogs are the nation's only undefeated team at 9-0 this season. After handing Kentucky and West Virginia its first defeats of the season, the Frogs showed no letdown in a dominating win at Air Force. It was their 28th straight regular season win, the longest active streak in the nation. Sarah Scherer asserted her season-long dominance, staying undefeated in smallbore (587) and air rifle (599).
On the season, Scherer leads TCU in air rifle, smallbore, and aggregate score, while Sarah Beard and Caitlin Morrissey are second and third in those categories, respectively. The Horned Frogs have the second-highest single-match aggregate score of anyone in the nation this year with their 4703 against Kentucky. They also hold such distinction in the smallbore category with 2346 points versus Jacksonville State.
UTEP's match against Air Force last Sunday was cancelled due to blizzards, preventing flights from coming into Denver. In their last time out, the Miners finished first out of six teams at the Withrow Invitational in Murray, Ky. Alix Moncada was the UTEP's top performer, finishing second in smallbore with a 585. Andrea Vautrin held a 582 to finish fourth. Both shooters fired 587s in air rifle to finish in the top ten, as well.
For the season, the Miners are posting an aggregate score of 4640, with Moncada's 1163 and Andrea Palafox's 1162 leading the squad. Vautrin is the team leader in smallbore while Moncada paces the squad in air rifle.
The two teams will face off at UTEP Rifle Range at a time to be determined.
