FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Rifle team will look to claim its second straight victory over an undefeated team Saturday when they host West Virginia. The Horned Frogs are winners of 26 straight regular season matches, while the Mountaineers are 9-0 on the season.
The Horned Frogs (7-0) knocked off previously unbeaten and defending national champion Kentucky, 4703-4693, last Saturday. The record-breaking performance was aided by outstanding performances from juniors Sarah Beard and Sarah Scherer. Beard posted the highest aggregate score of her career, while Scherer stretched her streak of finshing first in air rifle to seven straight matches.
Scherer paces the team in the air rifle, smallbore, and aggregate averages on the year, while Beard is second in all three categories. Senior Mattie Brogdon, junior Caitlin Morrissey and sophomore Catherine Green have each raised their games to the next level to help the Frogs to victory.
West Virginia is the only other undefeated team in the country and have won 12 straight regular season matches dating back to a loss to Kentucky on Feb. 5, 2011. The 9-0 Mountaineers finished second at the 2010-11 National Championships and have the third highest aggregate average in the country at 4680.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 4680-4616 victory against Alaska-Fairbanks on Sunday, in which junior Petra Zublasing finished first overall with a 1180 combined score. Senior Michael Kulbacki finished one point short of his season-high with an 1166 overall. Like Scherer, Zublasing is the Mountaineers' leader in all three events. Thomas Kyanko and Justin Pentz are both second on the squad in aggregate average with 1166.
