Track's Whitney Gipson Claims MWC Weekly Honors

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU junior Whitney Gipson has been selected as the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Newark, Texas native became the first female student-athlete in TCU history to win the women's long jump at the historic Penn Relays with a wind-aided leap of 21 feet, 11 ½ inches. The mark is the longest mark hit by a female in the 117 years of the Penn Relays and the history of Franklin Field. The previous meet and venue records were set by Auburn's Elva Goulbourne at 21 feet, 10 inches in 2003.
By winning the women's long jump, Gipson not only became the first female in TCU history to win the event in Philadelphia, but also became only the third student-athlete ever at TCU to win a long jump title at the Penn Relays, joining former Horned Frog greats Aundre Edwards (2003) and Jonathan Jackson (2008). Gipson is only the second female to win a jumps title at the historic meet after Neidra Covington earned the triple jump honor last season.
The Frogs have been handed six weekly honors since the outdoor season began in March. The nod is the first for Gipson this spring and second outdoor accolade of her career.
TCU will now begin preparations for the 2011 Mountain West Conference Championships, May 11-14, in Fort Collins, Colo.
