
Frogs Travel To Historic Penn Relays

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU track & field program will conclude the 2011 outdoor regular season in style this week, competing in the 117th running of the historic Penn Relays Carnival.
The three-day meet will begin for TCU Thursday and continue through Saturday at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Thursday's action is set to begin with the women's long jump at 11 a.m. CT.
TCU HISTORY AT THE PENN RELAYS
The Horned Frogs have enjoyed great success in the previous 116 years of one of the nation's premier outdoor track meets. Neidra Covington became the first female student-athlete in TCU history to win the women's triple jump at the historic Penn Relays last season.
In 2008, the Frogs captured five event titles, including the men's 4x400 crown. Former Horned Frog great Jonathan Jackson, who was named College Athlete of the Meet, added his name to the record books with the 10th-best leap in the men's triple jump in Penn Relays history.
Overall, the men and women's teams have combined to win 12 individual and 12 relay titles at Franklin Field. The Frogs have also had two men and two relay teams named the Outstanding Male College Athlete/Individual for the meet. In 2008, TCU brought its Wall of Fame total to two as the men's 1991 4x100 unit joined the 1986 4x200, which set a collegiate record at Penn, on the prestigious wall. Finally, the Frogs' have set two Penn Relays records on the men's side in the 4x100 and 4x200.
TCU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Frogs have several student-athletes ranked amongst the nation's best, according to TFRRS. Senior Jessica Young is currently the No. 7 woman in the country in the 100 meters (11.12w), No. 11 in the 200 meters (23.05) and No. 4 in the 400 meters (52.27).
Sophomore Charles Silmon is No. 10 in the men's 100 meters (10.19w) and No. 9 in the 200-meters after posting a time of 20.60 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational. Senior Mychal Dungey ran his personal-best last week at the Michael Johnson Classic to be ranked No. 10 in the men's 400 meters (45.64). In the men's 800 meters, Jack O'Brien and Sean Zurko enter this weekend ranked No. 16 and No. 30, respectively, nationally.
The men's 4x100 currently sits No. 11 in the NCAA, while the women's 4x400 is currently No. 11. The women's 4x100 is also listed at No. 25.
From the infield, women's long jumper Whitney Gipson ranks eighth in the NCAA this spring with a long leap of 20-11 ¼, while men's triple jumper Cameron Parker is listed at No. 13 with a distance of 51-9 1/4 from the Texas Relays.
TOP MARKS IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE
One week into the outdoor season, TCU currently holds the top spot in 14 different events in the Mountain West Conference. Overall, the Horned Frogs lead the conference in the men's 100, 200, 400, 800, 110-meter hurdles, 4x100, 4x400 and triple jump. On the women's side, the Purple and White top the conference in the 100, 200, 400, 4x100, 4x400 and long jump.
TCU SWEEPS MWC WEEKLY HONORS
TCU seniors Mychal Dungey and Jessica Young were selected as the Mountain West Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Dungey clocked a new personal-best in the 400 meters (45.64) for a second place finish at the Michael Johnson/Dr.Pepper Classic in Waco. Young followed with a new personal-best showing in the 200 meters (23.05) to take the individual title. The Frogs have been handed five weekly honors since the outdoor season began in March
