FORT WORTH - TCU celebrated another outstanding year for Horned Frog athletics at the annual end-of-the-year student-athlete banquet Monday evening. Seniors Andy Dalton and Jessica Young were named the Pop Boone Athletes of the Year.
Dalton, a four-year starter on TCU's Rose Bowl Champion football team, was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season. In his career, the Katy, Texas, native racked up 42 wins as a starter, the most all-time at TCU and the most in the NCAA in 2010-11 by an active starting signal-caller.
Young placed second in the 60-meter dash at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March, helping lead TCU to its highest-ever finish at the indoor national meet. The Columbia, S.C., native also earned her fifth-career All-America honor in the 4x400 meter relay.
In addition to the Pop Boone Award, Dalton was named the recipient of the Chancellor's Award, the department's highest honor. The award is presented to a student-athlete who displays exceptional talent in multiple areas and is only presented in years a candidate is deemed worthy.
Along with being a finalist for the Manning Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Bobby Bowden Award, Dalton also helped start an on-campus ministry group and read to local kids through TCU's Reading Frogs program.
TCU also honored its student-athletes for the work on the field and in the classroom. Women's golfer Melissa Loh was recipient of the Dutch Meyer Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Singapore native is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a three-time All-America Scholar by the National Golf Coaches Association. Loh was named to this year's All-Mountain West Conference team.
Bart Johnson took home the Dutch Meyer Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Academic All-American was the football program's G. Malcolm Louden Academic Achievement Award recipient and was named the TCU Scholar-Athlete by the National Football Foundation's Gridiron Club of Dallas. A former walk-on, Johnson hauled in 85 receptions during his TCU career.
TCU consensus All-American Tejay Johnson was given the department's William Koehler Academic Achievement Award, honoring a student-athlete who displays tremendous perseverance and accomplishment while overcoming obstacles of a unique nature. The Garland, Texas, native will graduate next spring with a degree in Habilitation of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Rifle's Alex Ferguson was presented with the Hal Jay Community Spirit Athlete Award, given to the TCU student-athlete who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in the field of community service.
A new award for 2011, the Breakout Student-Athlete Award, was given to Colin Jones. He tallied 80 tackles in 2010-11 and earned his first-career All-MWC honor. In the Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin, the Bridgeport, Texas, native had a career-high 10 tackles and a sack.
The TCU Athletics Department also honored Most Valuable Players from each sport and recognized those student-athletes who were named All-Americans. Those honorees are listed below.
