FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU football coach Gary Patterson held his weekly news conference Tuesday in the Four Sevens Team Room. The No. 19 Horned Frogs host Colorado State Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Included below are excerpts from Patterson's meeting with the media.
On the rest of the season ...
"We have two left to win a conference title. Nobody probably thought we'd get to color in that part (conference road games) of the pyramid, but we did. We have to win against Colorado State and UNLV. Both teams are improved, and I hope it's a good thing we're playing them at home."
On TCU's seniors going for a win record ...
"The seniors have a chance, with a win, to become the all-time winningest class in TCU history. If I have to get them motivated for this one, they don't deserve to win a championship. They can be part of conference championships in three out of four years."
On the opportunity for another Mountain West title ...
"We need to win one out of two to win a part of it. To give ourselves a chance to do anything else as far as a BCS bowl, we have to win these ballgames."
On the leadership that has developed with his team ...
"The offensive line and Tank Carder have come forward. Kenny Cain has really stepped up as a junior. I've watched this whole football team grow up. I'd say the group that has really been consistent the whole way through, as far as fighting their tails off, is the offensive line. They have been there since the beginning. On defense, the linebackers have been our leadership. The linebackers and offensive line have been the ones that have kept this whole group together."
On talking with his team about bowl scenarios ...
"I've told them they have an outside chance to get to a BCS game. It's no different than last year. We were going into our final game, and Boise State was playing Nevada. We didn't know where we were going. They get beat, and TCU is going to the Rose Bowl. We don't sit much differently than we did a year ago. There are a couple teams ahead of us, so we need to climb a few notches in the BCS standings. The biggest thing we can do is what we did a year ago. You have to control your own business and go win."
On what the win over Boise State meant for the program ...
"From our standpoint, we look at it as a measuring-stick game. Where are we as a program? How high of a level can we play at in big ballgames? It gives me an estimation of where I can push, and where I can go as a program. We have to win two more ballgames for a championship. It would be special for us to come back this season and have another opportunity to win a championship when nobody thought we could beat Boise State."
On what he sees from Colorado State ...
"They keep getting better and better. They are more physical. We have to be ready to play. They'll come ready to play us. It's their last chance to play us. They run the ball and throw it vertical on offense. On defense, they bend but don't break and are very physical."
