FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU football coach Gary Patterson held his weekly news conference Tuesday in the Four Sevens Team Room of the Meyer-Martin Athletic Complex. The Horned Frogs return to Mountain West play Saturday at San Diego State. Kickoff is 9:30 p.m. CDT with the contest televised on CBS Sports Network.
Included below are excerpts from Patterson's meeting with the media.
On the week's preparation ...
"It's another week. Obviously, we aren't where we want to be. We're 3-2, but we are 1-0 in the conference and have an opportunity to win a Mountain West championship. The San Diego State game is one we circled at the beginning of the year, where you have to take your own energy. They play well at night and have had two weeks to prepare for us. We have to be ready."
On San Diego State ...
"They are unbelievable athletically. We haven't played anyone as an overall football team that is as athletic as what San Diego State is. Rocky Long has brought toughness to them. You could see it last year when he was a defensive coordinator, and you can see it this year with him as a head coach."
On the mindset of his players this week ...
"They've done well. You see the kind of character this football team has by the way they fought back in the SMU and Baylor games. After I watched the film, we played better defensively against SMU than we did against Louisiana-Monroe and Portland State."
On where his team is through five games ...
"We're a young football team, but after two ballgames they're not young anymore. You're either going to be mature or immature. We have to grow up and go make plays. We're still an overtime and a field goal away from being 5-0. We're going to keep battling. We're going to keep improving. That's my job as a head coach."
On the bye week after this week's game ...
"No matter what happens at San Diego State, we're going to have a chance to rest and get people healthy. We'll work on some things to improve on going into the last half of the season. It's as simple as that."
