GUADALAJARA, Mexico - TCU senior Edgar Crespo notched a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke Sunday evening at the 2011 Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Crespo finished second in his preliminary heat when he clocked a 1:02.29 to qualify for the "A" final. He returned in the evening to post a time of 1:03.08 in the finals, which was good for fifth-place overall against some of the world's best competition.
He finished behind two swimmers each from Brazil and the United States, which lead the swimming medal count at the event by a wide margin. Brazil's Felipe Franca took the gold medal in 1:00.34.
The Panama City, Panama, native narrowly missed out on grabbing a spot on the medal stand, but battled a brutal travel schedule that saw him arrive in Guadalajara less than 12 hours before hitting the pool for the first time. Crespo competed for TCU in South Bend, Ind., over the weekend.

"He really wanted to medal, but that was a rough schedule he had," TCU coach Richard Sybesma said. "I'm proud of him for battling to place fifth. He didn't get into Guadalajara until after 10 p.m., Saturday night."
Crespo is the TCU record holder in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events. His long-course personal best time in the 100-meter breaststroke is 1:01.94, which he notched at the FINA World Championships last summer in Shanghai. He is also set to suit up in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Pan-American Games.
