FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The TCU track and field teams finished strong on the final day of competition inside the Randal Tyson Track Center for the 2011 Razorback Invitational.
"For the most part, this weekend was a starting point for us," TCU head coach Darryl Anderson said. "It's not the Super Bowl or the end of the line; it's a start. But the bottom line is that we've got to get better. We see where we are now and it is up to us to get better before we come back to this track in two weeks for the Tyson Invitational and then later for conference championships and the NCAA meet."
The women's 4x400 quartet of Quinterra Charles, Kristal Juarez, Teneshia Peart and Jessica Young stormed around the track at 3:35.28 to claim third overall, behind Texas and winner Arkansas. TCU's heat boasted three of the top four relay squads in the country, as the Frogs' foursome entered the weekend with the top 4x400 time (3:35.97) in the nation from the opening meet in College Station.
On the men's side, TCU team of Jordan Pitts, Mychal Dungey, Lavon Collins and Narada Jackson finished fourth in the second heat with a seasonal-best time of 3:13.93 to finish seventh overall
Young qualified for the women's 60-meter finals, but did not compete, after turning in the top overall semifinals mark of 7.27, joining sophomore Chaniqua Corinealdi, who finished eighth overall in the finals at 7.59 seconds. Freshman Franchelle Hill also competed in the 60-meter semifinals Saturday, posting a time of 7.72 seconds to finish 12th overall.
In the finals of the men's 60 meters, Charles Silmon finished fifth overall with a finals time of 6.81 seconds. Silmon, a Waco native, qualified for the finals by clocking the fourth-fastest time in semifinals action at 6.72 seconds. Junior Mark Barnes also competed in the semifinals, crossing the finish line in 16th place Saturday.
In the women's 800-meter run championship, freshman Briyanni Thomas clocked a seasonal-best time of 2:10.82 to place second overall. The Fort Bend, Texas, native now has the top 800 time in the Mountain West Conference. Juarez led all Frogs in the women's 400 meters, registering a time of 55.21, while Charles (55.42) and Hayley Shade (56.67) notched new collegiate-bests Saturday.
On the men's side, junior Jack O'Brien earned a seventh-place finish in the men's 800-meter invite with a personal-best clocking of 1:50.34. Senior Sean Zurko held a strong lead in the event, before running out of gas in the final 200 meters to drop to eighth overall at 1:50.37.
In the field events, sophomore Cameron Tabor made his 2011 debut in the weight throw, tossing 16.91 meters to place ninth overall. Junior Cameron Parker made his triple jump debut in a Horned Frogs uniform, recording a leap of 15.62 meters to tally a seventh-place finish.
TCU will take two weeks to prepare for its next meet, as the Frogs will return to Fayetteville for the Tyson Invitational, Feb. 11-12.
