FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team is a week into their fall camp and gofrogs.com caught up with junior middle blocker Kristen Hester to find out how things were progressing.
GF: You are a week into preseason camp, how are those going?
KH: So far practice has gone really well. We had such a successful season last year and it got us excited for this upcoming year. Before double days even started all of us were counting down the days because we were so eager to get back into the gym. Last year we got a taste of what it was like to make it to the NCAA tournament, so that's really what is pushing us to work hard everyday. We know how far we CAN make it and we want to go even farther this year.
GF: You are now a junior on the squad, how fast have the last two years gone? Do you find yourself taking more of a leadership role with the newcomers?
KH: The past two years have been amazing; I can't believe I'm already a junior! I definitely find myself taking more of a leadership role this year. When I was a freshman, I remember Kourtney Edwards always helping me out especially in the middle position, so now that she has graduated I feel like that is my role to help out the newcomers as much as I can.
GF: How have the five newcomers meshed with the team so far?
KH: The newcomers are doing awesome, they seemed a little nervous at first which is normal but everyday they seem to open up more and more and we are all getting along really well.
GF: Tell us a little bit about your summer, things you did, places you went, etc.
KH: This summer I took a May and June semester of summer school, so when July came around I was ready for a little break before we started double days. Other than taking summer school, I spent my summer at the baseball games. Most of my teammates and I had the chance to go to Omaha to watch the baseball team compete in the College World Series. That trip was amazing! Kylie Pont lives in Omaha so we were able to stay with her and we had a blast. Other than that, Irene and I spent most of the summer just working out, playing sand volleyball a lot and hanging out with our family. We also became Aunts! My brother and his wife actually just had their little baby boy, Landon Jay Hester on August 5th so we are super excited!!
GF: Describe what it has been like to play with your sister the last two seasons.
KH: Playing with my sister for these past two years has been absolutely amazing! I couldn't imagine it any other way. We have played together since I was a freshman in high school and I love it. If I'm having a bad game she always knows exactly what to say to help me get back into the game. Or if I'm feeling lazy one day during workouts, she's always the one to push me to work my hardest even if I really don't want to. We are pretty much like twins, so just imagine having your best friend around you 24/7. It's a blast!
