FORT WORTH, Texas - It was a clean sweep of the Mountain West Conference weekly awards as Bryan Holaday was honored as the Hitter of the Week and Kyle Winkler the Pitcher of the Week. For Holaday, it is his second honor of the season and for Winkler his first.
Holaday went 11-for-21 (.524) while helping the Horned Frogs to a 4-0 mark last week, including a three-game Mountain West series sweep of BYU on the road. The Dallas, Texas, native recorded at least two hits and one run scored in all four games, totaling five runs batted in, six runs scored, three doubles and one home run for the week.
In Tuesday's 6-1 victory against Texas A&M, Holaday went 2-for-4 with one double and two runs scored as the Frogs registered their first win over the Aggies since 1995. He followed that performance with a 2-for-6, one-RBI, one-run scored effort in Friday's 14-8, series-opening win at BYU. On Saturday, Holaday went 4-for-5, hitting one double and one home run, while driving in three runs and scoring two more in the 12-1 win. He capped off the series by going 3-for-6 in Sunday's 6-5, 11-inning victory, tallying one double, one RBI and one run scored.
For the week, he compiled an .810 slugging percentage and a .524 on-base percentage. Defensively, he tallied 27 putouts from his catcher's position.
Winkler picked up his sixth victory of the season in the Frogs' 12-1 road win over BYU last Friday. The product of Sugar Land, Texas, gave up one earned run and three hits, while registering six strikeouts and four walks over eight innings of work. He retired eight straight batters before surrendering the Cougars' lone score, a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Winkler faced 30 batters overall, retiring eight of the last 10 hitters he faced, including the final four.
