"It was a great win tonight against a phenomenal team in Texas A&M," said head coach Gary Reynolds. "They've got some of the best riders in the nation, so to be able to come in here with this type of crowd and have a game like this was huge. We're fortunate to have come out on top tonight. We had some great individual efforts from a variety of members on the team. It's a team sport and you never know until the last one goes in how it is going to turn out."
Aikman, a junior from Mission, secured the Horned Frog victory on the final ride of the night in front of 1,623 spectators inside the John Justin Arena. She downed Randi Standley in Horsemanship, 71.25-70. Sophomore Courtney Chown tallied the other point for the Frogs in the event, defeating Katie Lisabeth, 72.75-72.5.
Overall, TCU and the Aggies battled to a 2-2 draw in Horsemanship.
"Ashley Aikman has been a solid rider this year for us. She's had such a phenomenal year," said Reynolds. "She's coming into this spring with so much confidence. I know when it comes down to it, she's going to lay it all on the line. Ashley never beats herself and all I need her to do is just ride her game, which she did tonight."
The Horned Frogs dominated the nation's No. 3 ranked team in Reining, cruising to a 3-1 decision on Friday night. Kelsey Huffman claimed her ninth Reining victory on the season, upending Maggie Gratny, 69.5-69.25. Kolby Simonson and Ashton Mickunas also posted victories, downing Randi Standley and Tara Christiansen, respectively.
With the victory, TCU moved to 10-2 overall in Western, while Texas A&M dropped to 6-3 in Western events on the season. Overall, both schools have combined to win the last two Western National Championships.
TCU will next be in action against SMU in Dallas on Feb. 14.
