What's on Tap
The TCU men's swimming and diving teams travel the short bus ride to Mansfield, Texas, for The Southwest Collegiate Plunge. The five-team meet features four teams from the state of Texas and three teams from the Big 12 Conference.
Action at the Southwest Collegiate Plunge begins Friday at 6 p.m. The remaining events will commence at 12 noon Saturday. The Mansfield ISD pool is a 10-lane pool, with each team getting two lanes in each event. The teams' lanes will be five lanes apart from each other.
Two heats will be contested in each individual event and teams are allotted four entries in each event. The second heat will be the stronger of the two, as teams are asked to put their best two swimmers in the second heat. Swimmers are allowed to enter in a maximum of three events per day, including relays.
Relay events will have only one heat with teams allowed two entries per relay. Teams can enter two divers in each diving event.
Up Next
The next three meets on the TCU schedule are women's meets, all set for action at the TCU URC Natatorium. Next weekend, the Horned Frog women open their MWC schedule when they host Air Force on Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. San Diego State comes to Fort Worth the following day in a dual set to begin at 1 p.m.
The TCU men are off until Nov. 19 when both squads travel to Laramie, Wyo., to face the Wyoming Cowboys. The Wyoming dual is the last dual meet on the schedule before Winter Break.
Last Time Out
TCU kicked off its Mountain West Conference title defense on Oct. 22 by running its consecutive dual-winning streak to 10 with a 162-138 win over Air Force. The Frogs picked up relay wins to open and close the meet in the 200-medley relay and the 400-freestyle relay, respectively.
Individually, TCU got wins from Edgar Crespo (100-breast and 200-breast), Kyle Callens (1-meter dive and 3-meter dive), Andy Garcia-Montes (200-IM), Laszlo Gyurko (100-free), Friedrich Grott (200-fly) and Michael Franz (500-free).
About the Frogs
TCU graduated just two off its team that went through the dual season unschated a year ago. This year's team is anchored by a core group of 10 seniors and an outstanding junior.
Junior Edgar Crespo opened the 2010-11 campaign by remaining undefeated in breaststroke events during his TCU career. The Panama City, Panama, native earned an NCAA "B" cut in the 100-breast in his season debut against Air Force. Crespo is third on the NCAA 100-breast list and 17th on the 200-breast performance list.
Senior Andy Garcia-Montes turned in an impressive performance in the 200-IM in his season debut and is 20th on the 200-IM performance list. In the 200-medley relay, Laszlo Gyurko, Crespo, Edgar Peyro and Devin Price are sixth on that NCAA descending order list.
In distance events, freshman Michael Franz won the 500-free and placed second in the 1000-free. Senior Kyle Callens once again leads the Horned Frogs in diving events. He has picked up wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive this season. Callens is a two-time All-MWC selection.
Scouting Missouri
Missouri opened its season Oct. 17 in a tri-team, double-dual scoring format against Southern Illinois and Kentucky. The Tigers claimed wins over both opponents, with junior Michael Lopresti leading the way. He claimed wins in the 100- and 200-breast. Mizzou also got wins in the 100-back, 200-back and the 200-IM.
Scouting SMU
The Mustangs dropped their season-opening dual to Air Force the day after TCU downed the Falcons. Diver Richard Cornelius was the top performer for SMU, as he earned a trip to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in his season debut. In the pool, Mindaugas Sadauskas and Mayy Roney lead the Mustangs.
Scouting Texas
Texas opens its 2010-11 season at The Southwest Collegiate Plunge as the defending NCAA Swimming and Diving team champion. The Longhorns claimed their 10th NCAA title a year ago. Texas returns multiple All-Americans and two NCAA champions from last year's team.
Scouting Texas A&M
The Aggies placed 12th at the NCAA Championships a year ago and open their season this week as well. Junior diver Grant Nel earned three All-America honors a year ago. A&M also returns three of four swimmers from last year's 400-free relay team that placed second at the NCAAs.

He earned the honor three times as a junior and once a sophomore. Freshman Michael Franz was named TCU's Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 25 after winning the 500-free against Air Force.
Franz the Fabulous Freshman
Freshman Michael Franz made an immediate impact in his first competitive action with the Horned Frogs. In the meet's second event, the 1000-freestyle, Franz placed second with a time of 9:29.74. That mark is third on TCU's all-time performance list.
