FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU will continue its 2010 indoor season next Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station. On Friday, head coach Darryl Anderson sat down with GoFrogs.com to give his thoughts on the Flyin' Frogs entering next week.
Fans not able to attend next Saturday's meet in College Station can follow it live by logging onto www.gofrogs.com. There you will find a link to the live results tab, which is located on the schedule page. Following action at Texas A&M, a full recap and final results will be posted on the TCU athletics website.
What do you see happening during next week's meet...
I think Monday we will be able to get a good idea of who did what over the break. When we usually get back from Christmas break, I am always under the assumption that no one did a lot over the break, so we slowly try to guide them back. This year is a little different though because we have three meets right in a row. We as a coaching staff have to be careful in how we train the kids the first three weeks because we have to keep ourselves in a position where we can go compete and be successful at meets. It is a very interesting and trying three-week period. The biggest thing for me during our first three meets is that we come out of them without any big injuries or catastrophes. If we can do that, then we will be in good shape. The weather is also going to be a factor for us here because it is really cold for Texas right now, which would alter our training a little bit. Overall, I think the season could be a pretty good season for us if we can get through these first three weeks, but we are going to take our time and get to where we need to be, starting Monday.
On having a first meet before break...
By having a first meet before we went into break, it helped us take a look at what we have. The kids were able to get the first meet jitters out of the way and learn the protocol of what it takes to compete at a high level. If we wouldn't have had that first meet, we would have had to go through that next week, so that was good to get that out of the way early. The other thing that it did for us is that it gave us a measuring stick to see where we are at right now. An example, Charles Silmon opens up at 6.67 seconds, which is an extremely fast time, so he has a measuring stick that is pretty high at this point. Some of our other kids don't have that high of a measuring stick, so we as a coaching staff have to help elevate them above where they started at. We also have to help the kids who have a high measuring stick, like Charles, get back to where they were before break. That was really a plus for us, especially right out of the gate to have that first meet.
On having three meets in a row to continue the indoor season...
I think it really helps us when we get into the Mountain West Conference Championships. The level of competition that we will have seen entering the Mountain West will help prepare us and tighten the screws up before both conference and nationals. It will definitely show the kids the type of standard that we are looking for, which is pretty high.
