DALLAS -- The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum has named TCU tailback Joseph Turner a candidate for the 2009 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate running back.
Turner has led TCU in rushing and touchdowns each of the last two campaigns. His top-two rushing efforts last season came in victories over undefeated, top-10 opponents Boise State and BYU.
A senior from Austin, Texas, Turner had 577 yards and 11 scores last year. His final touchdown of the 2008 campaign, a 17-yard carry, provided the go-ahead points with 8:51 to play in a 17-16 Poinsettia Bowl victory over Boise State. Turner had a season-best 83 yards against the ninth-ranked Broncos.
Turner rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown in a 32-7 win over then-No. 8 BYU.
Turner was selected by his teammates as TCU's Offensive Most Valuable Player in the 2007 campaign when he ran for 597 yards and six scores. He was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 226 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-33 win at San Diego State. It was the 14th-best single-game effort in TCU history and the most yards by a Frog since Lonta Hobbs ran for 287 against Memphis in 2002. The four scores tied for the third-best single-game rushing touchdown total at TCU.
The Horned Frogs are 10-0 when Turner rushes for at least 56 yards in a game.
Former TCU standout LaDainian Tomlinson won the 2000 Doak Walker Award.
