
Hughes Adds To Preseason Honors

FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been tabbed a first-team preseason All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com in addition to being named to the watch list for the 2009 Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation's best defensive player.
Hughes, a consensus All-American last year, has now appeared on six preseason All-America teams. He is on the watch list for five national awards.
A 6-foot-3, 257-pound senior, Hughes led the nation in 2008 with 15 sacks and six forced fumbles. He also ranked in the top 10 in tackles for loss (19.5) and fumble recoveries (three). He added two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
The Sugar Land, Texas, native was a semifinalist for the 2008 Chuck Bednarik Award. He was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which also recognizes the nation's top defensive player.
Hughes was among 15 finalists, including one of just five defensive players, for the 2008 Walter Camp Player of the Year award.
