ROME, Italy - TCU swimmer Edgar Crespo swam a new personal-best time in the men's 100-breaststroke on the opening day of the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy, Sunday.
The Panama City native impressed in the 100-breast, tapping the wall at 1:02.92, to finish 64th out of 142 swimmers. Crespo registered a clocking of 1:03.72 in the same event at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing a year ago.
"I felt good," Crespo said. "The swimming pool is beautiful and I felt fast in the water. However, Italy is really hot right now. The temperature is around 102 degrees."
Crespo will get a day to prepare for the 50-breast Tuesday before ending his week with the 200-breast on Thursday. Horned Frog record holder Alejandro Gomez kick-off his week in the 800-freestyle Tuesday, followed by the 4x200-free relay and 1500-free on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
